Postmenopause is the physiological period following menopause. Since in the united states the age of the menopause ranges between 48 and 55 years, generally conceived as middle age, postmenopause often refers to women considerably older (1). Postmenopause is typified by the lack of ovarian production. Most of the effects of postmenopause result from hypoestrogenism. Androstenedione from adrenal glands is also converted to estrone in extra-ovarian tissues such as fat, bone, muscle, brain, and skin. During postmenopause, the endometrium becomes atrophic, there are decreased vaginal secretions, the vaginal mucosa thins, and the vagina loses elasticity, as well as shortening and narrowing.
