Basics

  • one of the most abundant elements in the human body
  • almost all present as phosphate
  • Phosphate is an integral component of:
    1. nucleic acids
    2. phospholipids of cell membranes
    3. many important regulatory phosphoproteins
  • More than 80% (600-700g) is present in bone
  • an important component of hydroxy apatite
  • In other tissues, phosphate is principally found in the intracellular compartment
  • phosphate absorption is also under the influence of vitamin D

Dietary sources

  • Found in milk and dairy products, meat, fish and poultry, whole grain cereals, legumes and nuts
  • Probably too much of it in some foods such as processed meats and pop (Coke, Pepsi, etc.)
  • Recommended daily intake: ~800 mg (~calcium)
