Osmosis is the net movement of water down its concentration gradient, usually through a membrane permeable to water. Several factors can affect the movement of water across membranes:

  1. Permeability of the membrane to the solutes in the intracellular and interstitial fluids.
  2. The concentration gradients of the solutes in the intracellular and interstitial fluids.
  3. The pressure gradient across the cell membranes
