Postganglionic parasympathetic autonomic nervous system acetylcholine receptors are muscarinic, as are acetylcholine receptors on sweat glands and in the brain. Muscarinic receptors are G protein-coupled receptors. The complicated coupling mechanism causes the response to acetylcholine to be delayed and then last after acetylcholine has been removed from the receptor.
