Midgut volvulus is a rare but devastating disorder of pediatric gastroenterology in which a child's gut is malrotated. There is very severe and episodic pain that often wakes the child at night. If this condition is suspected, the child should have a small bowel X-ray, and treated surgically (with Ladd's procedure).
