Menses are the catamenial or menstrual discharge, a periodic flow of blood or bloody fluid from the uterus or generative organs in the reproductive female (1). Menses follow the menstrual cycle. Regular menses are contingent on both an intact hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and a normal outflow tract. In the reproductive female, menses begin at menarche and can be absent due to several factors, resulting in amenorrhea.
