Macrocytic anemia

Macrocytic Anemias, also known as megaloblastic anemia, are a type of anemia in which red blood cells are bigger than normal, and have an increased mean cell volume:

<math>\mbox {MCV} = \left ( \frac {\mbox {Packed Cell Volume } (PCV)} { \mbox{No of Red blood cells } (RBC)} \right )</math>

The large cells result from maturation problems in the bone marrow (classically, folate and cobalamin deficiencies).
