A choledochal cyst is a congenital dilatation of the common bile duct. Complications include infection, stones, stricture, and cholangiocarcinoma. It is thought that bile stasis predisposes to bacterial overgrowth and generation of unconjugated secondary bile acids, leading to metaplasia, dysplasia, and malignancy. Excision is the treatment of choice.
