  • reservoir in seagulls (Campylobacter coli / Campylobacter laridis)
  • ulcerative collitus is not directly caused by infection with Camylobacter
  • an acute phase due to imflammation following infection can be seen that looks like ulcerative colitus
  • verotoxin
    • attacks human liver cells
    • specific culture needs to be requested
    • most common cause of gastroenteritis and travellers diarrhea
    • cause explosive diarrhea
    • especially caused by raw milk
  • a special culture needs to be carried out (stool culture at 42°C in specific media
  • Should state suspicion of Campylobacter, so lab will preparethe special culture
  • more common to do culture than microscopy for diagnosis.
