Calcitonin

Again, what are the targets and actions?

  • Poorly understood targets and actions
  • difference in pharmacological dose (and effects) and physiological dose (and effects)
  • Effects on two well-studied organs:
    • bone
      • suppresses reabsorption of bone by inhibiting osteoclasts
      • release calcium and phosphorous into blood

Is there a real physiological role for this hormone?

  • At best, it has a minor role in regulating blood calcium
  • Decreased calcitonin =/= decreased or abnormal serum calcium
