Basics

a disorder of language caused by a defect in either the production or comprehension of vocabulary or syntax

Subtypes

Broca's aphasia

  • lesion of Broca's area
  • executive/nonfluent

Wernicke's Aphasia

  • lesion of Wernicke's area
  • receptive/fluent

Conduction aphasia

  • lesion of the arcuate fasciculus linking the Wernicke's and Broca's areas
  • Patient has a fluent aphasia with poor repetition of spoken language
  • despite phonetic errors, the patient tends to have good comprehension of spoken language.
