Antenatal steroids are used to help manage labour and delivery in a reproductive female in danger of preterm delivery. Usually, Betamathasone 12mg is administered intramuscularly and repeated every 24 hrs. The benefits are a 50% reduction in perinatal mortality, 50% reduction in respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and a 50% reduction in intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH).

The maximum benefit is obtained within 24hrs to 7 days after the first dose, though the administration of multiple courses is controversial.
